and the words of another resident of Bodrum, Cevat
Sakir, who said "The heavenly bliss of life in Bodrum
is better than any eternal bliss that may await
us" were not without foundation in reality.
Throughout history Bodrum, known as Halikarnassos
in ancient times, has always been fought over and
people have been unwilling to share its beauty with
others.
Built on a peninsula formed by the meeting of the
eastern and western harbors, Bodrum, with its narrow
streets winding down to the sea, is famous for its
castle, its world-renowned yachts, its shipyards
and the dazzling white houses and tombs lining the
shores of its two harbors.
Today Bodrum has everything that one would
expect to find in a vacation getaway. It is an important
tourist center in both winter and summer. Bodrum
has what it takes to make everyone feel at home,
from the rich yacht owners who come from around
the globe to the penny-counting tourists who
just wants a reasonable room so that he can stretch
his budget to make his vacation last all summer.
Bodrum
Information - The impressive medieval castle
built by the Knights of Rhodes, guards the entrance
by sea to Bodrum's dazzling blue bay, where the
Aegan and Mediterranean Sea's meet. Bodrum has gained
the reputation of being the center of Turkish art
and high society crowds, with its lively, friendly
atmosphere where night clubs, bars and superb discos
keep you going until dawn. Alternately, the evenings
can be for sitting idly in one of the harbour front
restaurants in Bodrum, or dining by the sea in one
of the many enchanting villages lined along the
peninsula.
Climate
- Bodrum's climate is wonderfully pleasant.
In summer, the dry heat rarely goes above 35°C,
while the water is a balmy 25°C. In winter, although
it gets chilly, it can be mild enough to dine outside,
and all you will generally need is a sweater or
lightweight raincoat.
Getting
There - A 45 minute plane journey on Turkish
Airlines from Istanbul, will bring you to Milas
/ Bodrum Int. Airport, only 30 km from The Marmara
Bodrum. Direct charter flights are also available.
Activities-Bodrum's
superb climate and setting means you can enjoy your
favourite outdoor activities nearly all year round.
Bodrum is a water sports paradise where you can
sail, scuba dive, windsurf, water - ski, or just
swim.
The Blue
Cruise offers a unique combination of ancient history,
isolated bays and villages out of time, while enjoying
the serenity and privacy of being at sea. Traditional
"Gulet" wooden boats, chartered yachts, bare boats
or flotillas are all available to sample the varied
delights of the Turquoise Coast.
The landward
side of Bodrum with its rugged hills and colourful
villages is a magnet for trekkers and horseriders.
Foot paths, almost 100 years old, connected to villages,
provides for the challenges of a good walk without
worrying about maps. Riders can also enjoy one of
the Riding Clubs in Bodrum.
Winter or
summer, archaeological sites may be visited and
are within easy reach. In Bodrum itself, sites not
to be missed include the Mausoleum, a monument that
was one of The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,
which once stood as high as twenty - storey building,
the amphitheatre on the hill above town, and the
early 15th Centry Castle also houses a world famous
museum of under - water archaeology and was built
using stones from the Mausoleum.
