"Virgin of the Illumination Country " Fethiye, is in a bay open through north, surrounded by pine forests within Fethiye gulf, in which large and small islands distributed within Mediterranean. It descends from rocky tombs and the front of the castle to  the plains, from Karagözler to sea. Its horizon is composed of şövalye adası (knight island), Gunlukbari and mountains towards them. It is known with monuments belong to Persians, Lycians, Carians and Romans. It is one of the most important tourism  centers of our country with its cultural wealth, natural beauties and geography.

Surrounding Areas
Fethiye is a lively and busy harbour town which may be reached by a short Dolmus (minibus) ride.   With a bustling population of 45,000, the town was originally named Telmessos and can be dated back to the 4th century BC!  Once a grand Lycian city, traces of the ancient settlement can still be seen around the town. These include the 20 rock tombs in the hillside of Fethiye the largest being Amynates tomb. The tomb has over one hundred steps leading up to it and the views over the harbour from this point are breathtaking!

Shopping
Fethiye in addition to its many shops and restaurants holds a weekly market offering a wealth of bargains.   Bartering is definitely the order of the day and can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience whether you are buying a Turkish carpet or a mere string of beads! Particular bargains are to be found on local produce such as Turkish carpets, gold, silver, leather, suede, fake designer labels, spices and good quality tailoring.

History
Oludeniz (or 'dead' or 'calm sea') takes its name from Turkish legend. In Medieval times, many Greek-bound Syrian and Egyptian ships used to pass by Oludeniz and take on board fresh water. One day the handsome son of an old sea captain met Belcekiz, a beautiful young girl, at the bay where he stopped to fetch water. The two fell in love at first sight and thereafter, would meet whenever the young man's ship passed by. One day the father and son were caught in a terrible storm at sea.  The son, knowing the area well, suggested they take shelter in the calm, protected waters of the inlet at Oludeniz, but the old captain objected, believing that his son might be endangering the ship just to meet his beloved. Their disagreement turned into a violent quarrel, and, when the captain thought his ship was about to be dashed on the rocks he shoved his son into the sea with his oar. Finally, he saw the calm waters of the inlet in front of them but it was by then of course too late. Belcekiz, on hearing of her lover's death, threw herself into the sea and also drowned. The place where she died is called Belcekiz, and the inlet that became her lover's watery grave is called Oludeniz.
